Outside Agencies
Visually Impairment Team
The Visually Impaired (VI) team work with individual pupils to assess their visual functioning and support their access to the curriculum. The team works with children from the initial diagnosis of a visual impairment, often before the child starts school, and continues to provide support throughout school.
Hearing Impairment Team
The Hearing Impairment (HI) team support children and young people in school in a variety of ways from weekly teaching support, monitoring visits and annual assessments. The team is able, upon referral, to assess pupils which either staff or parents and carers have concerns about regarding their hearing. The team also gives support for specialist equipment and is also available to offer any help or advice to staff or parents and carers.
Physiotherapy Service
Paediatric Physiotherapists are specialists in assessment and treatment of children with disorders of movement and coordination. Therapy may be in the form of individual treatments, group sessions, hydrotherapy (in the pool), rebound therapy (on the trampoline), positioning programmes or advice, or a combination. Physiotherapy equipment that may be used includes, standing frames, benches, wedges and walking aids.
Occupational Therapy Service
Occupational Therapists (OT) assess children and young people for wheelchairs, recommend wheelchairs and provide advice about specialist postural inserts within wheelchairs. OTs also recommend specialist static chairs for school and home, based on the needs of the child. OTs give advice to parents and carers regarding the safe and correct use of any specialist equipment.
Nursing Service
The nursing service provides specialist paediatric nursing for children with special needs in school and at home. The nurse acts as a health resource for parents and carers, liaising and communicating with other agencies and health professionals. They also administer specialised medication.
Speech and Language Therapy Service
The school has two named Speech and Language Therapists employed by Rotherham HNS Foundation Trust who work mainly with primary-age children. Children are seen for assessment and where appropriate a programme of work is provided which is aimed at developing a targeted area of a child's communication skills. Programmes are delivered by class teams with support from the Inclusion and Outreach Team. Many pupils use Alternative and Augmentative Communication systems (AAC); these can be low tech such as symbols/pictures/photographs or high-tech such as an iPad.
The service also provides support and advice on the management of eating and drinking skills and feeding sessions are held one lunch time during each half term.
The service has an open referral system (anyone can refer). If you have any questions please ask your child's class teacher or contact the SALT team on 01709 423230.
