Key Stage 4 Curriculum
From Year 9 onwards, Preparation for Adulthood objectives become woven into each pupil’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) targets. In Key Stage 4, the curriculum shifts to place greater emphasis on independent living, life skills, and social and community inclusion. Learners are supported to explore life beyond Kelford and consider their options for adulthood.
Across all pathways, pupils begin to explore careers, employment, and social care opportunities through visits, practical experiences, enterprise projects, and classroom-based learning. The KS4 curriculum aims to develop our pupils as independent, active, and valued citizens.
The curriculum includes:
English, Maths, RE, PE, PSD, Work-Related Learning, Life Skills, and Thematic Work, which incorporates Expressive Arts, Science, Geography, History, Music, and ICT.
Pupils in KS4 work towards the ASDAN Transition Challenge accreditation. This has been mapped across our faculties to ensure learners continue to experience a broad and balanced curriculum. All pre-formal learners, and some informal learners depending on individual need, work towards the ASDAN Sensory Transition Challenge.
In core subjects, Lime and Green pathway learners continue to develop their knowledge and skills using our progression documents. Orange pathway learners are re-baselined using functional skills trackers and begin working towards their Entry Level qualifications in English and Maths. Where appropriate, pupils who are ready to sit Entry Level exams during KS4 are fully supported to do so.
Long-term plans for our core faculties show the sequencing of learning throughout KS4, building on knowledge and skills developed previously and pupil baselines. Learning in other faculties is linked to ASDAN-accredited outcomes. An overview of how this is delivered across KS4 is included below.
Pupils in KS4 do not follow the whole-school thematic topics directly. However, where meaningful curriculum links can be made, and where pupils can contribute to whole-school projects in a purposeful way, these opportunities are encouraged.
